GASTON DANCE, INC. GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPENTS
A. Recommendations and Applications Forms 1. Source of Recommendations—Guidance Counselors from Area Elementary, Middle & High Schools; Staff members of Recreation Centers; Staff of Area Youth Organizations; School Teachers; Church Leaders 2. B. Selection Criteria for Prospective Scholarship Students 1. Financially disadvantage students between the ages of 6 and 12 years old with or without prior dance training 2. Financially disadvantage student over the age of 10 years old with previous Dance training. (Eligibility reviewed by the School Director or Artistic Director) 3. Must submit completed Scholarship Application, Family Financial Statement and Letter of Recommendation. All information is due in the office of Gaston Dance Theatre by June 15, 2010. The Applicant will be contacted by phone to schedule an interview with the Applicant and a responsible adult and the School Director or Artistic Director and the Scholarship Committee. Scholarships are awarded and recipients notified by August 1, 2010. 4. Must display a disciplined character 5. Must have proportionate weight and height 6. Must have family/guardian/sponsor who can provide • Transportation to and from classes and performances • Encouragement and support 7. Must currently have and must maintain an overall academic average of a “C” (Student’s are required to bring in a copy of their report card to GDT each time report cards are distributed)
C. Guidelines for Maintaining Scholarship 1. Student must attend classes regularly and must notify GDT when student will be absent or tardy. Excused absences are limited to the student’s sickness, death in the immediate family or emergency situations. GDT will send a Warning Letter after four consecutive missed classes. If attendance does not improve immediately, scholarship will be forfeited 2. Scholarship students are encouraged to participate in all productions for which they are eligible. The student must be present and on time for all scheduled rehearsals and performances. An unexcused absence could result in loss of Scholarship. 3. Parent /Guardian/Sponsor must perform 20 volunteer hours under the guidelines of the “Ballet Guild”. This would include working on a committee and/or working during performance time. 4. The Scholarship is renewable each year with a re-submission of a Family Financial Statement, so long as all other guidelines are maintained, funding is available, and the Scholarship Committee approves.
D. Guidelines for Provision of Dancewear Dancewear will only be made available during the 2010-2011 season if funding is available. If funds are available the following will apply: 1. The Scholarship provides shoes for dance class but not to exceed one pair of ballet slippers, one pair of Pointe shoes (if studying Pointe) and one pair each of tap and jazz shoes. 2. The Scholarship Committee shall provide one required leotard (two, if Level II or above) and two pairs of tights per year. The Parent/Guardian/Sponsor shall provide any extra dancewear needed through out the year and at performances. A Parent/Guardian/Sponsor may submit a written request to the Scholarship Committee for additional help with dancewear twice year. Final approval will be determined by the Scholarship Committee Chair and the School Director or Artistic Director.
